How smart are you? What is elegance?

Being smart … elegant … posh …

How?

What does it really mean? Is it a good thing?

Do we have to wear golden clothes, or shining diamonds to be elegant?

Or it is about a different kind of sparkle and light?

Definitely there are so many examples of people, still alive or not, that are an emblem of elegance even if they are not wearing any silver nor gold, nor shining dresses nor accessories.

Just to quote one that I did love so much, and I still do: Audrey Hepburn. She was elegant even wearing any casual dress. It was a matter of style: her presence, not just merely the posture nor the manners.

So then?

What is your concept of elegance? Is it just in fashion or a personal definition despite of clothes?

Little princesses grow?

Starting from when we are little we can be dressed like a noble princess, but one thing is the dress, the other is the person.

In this world who only looks at the apparence it is easy to have prejudices, but if we look well to each other we will realize how elegant people are even in daily life clothes, without ceremony dresses and so on.

This does not mean that is not nice to dress up, but it is not a necessary condition to be really elegant.

I would like to give you another example of elegance: Kate Middleton. You may like her or not but for me she is a real example of elegance. Which has a sober side, in the sense that to be elegant we do not need to be too much. Not too much make-up, nor too many jewels, nor too much of anything.

In latin we say “in media stat virtus”. It is so true, it can be translated “in the middle virtue stays”.

Balance. Always, in anything in life.

Then of course it depends also on the event we are attending, the choice of the right outfit.

For my first novel presentation I chose a Ralph Laurent dress which for me is really beautiful because it has some very special details but it is not excessive. Not too short, nor too flashy …

And I would like to remember you that with a dress that already has a motive, tights should be simple. On the contrary if the dress is simple then you could dare with some tights which have a motive, or a design … Again balance. And elegance is really the concept of “less is better than more”.

In Italy we say not to look like a “Christmas tree”! To say that too much is too much. Too many points of attraction for the sight.

And what about just a simple classical black dress?

This picture is from my book, a few years ago. I would go now for a less red lipstick, thinner heels, maybe black tights, and what about a nice hair chignon (hair bun) or just very straight hair?

To look more elegant sometimes is enough even just an accessory.

What about a nice necklace or a foulard?

 

Pearls maybe could a bit “old fashion” for someone, but even just a simple jewel, not necessarily a real one: on the market with very little money everyone could buy jewels that just look like real ones but are not. Or even something original with some semi-precious stones like amethyst, or even glass …

And what about a casual-elegant outfit? How do you like it?

You see even an hoodie can become very smart … This one is a kid’s wear.

But even adults …

Sometimes in a garment a detail can really make the difference.

Like even a plain black cardigan can become something completely different.

This one is maybe a bit too much. Sometimes even just a little decoration can change everything in an outfit.

Most important thing you have to follow your curves.

Because elegant means also not showing all the lines of the body but marking the most important ones only.

So for instance a nice straight falling pair of trousers will do better than a skinny one if you are not that slim in your legs.

Body lines have to be defined by clothes, not to look more than what they are.

Also definitely showing too much is not elegant. I am talking about the décolleté in particular or too short skirts. But there are some outfits where there could be an exception for this general advice. I have in mind even some garments seen on the “red carpet”. It all depends who is wearing what, and how, and with what kind of surrounding rest of the outfit (shoes, tights, jackets …).

So rules for elegance: less in general and more simplicity, following the lines, attention to details and accessories (and not too many of them also) …

And regarding accessories the bag is really an essential part of our outfit.

It has to be coordinated. And if you are not sure remember that a small black bag is always a safe bet. Then of course the design, the material …

And do we want to talk about shoes?

If you have a black dress, or a dark color dress, shoes should be dark, or at least not lighter in color than the dress itself.

Harmony in colors, harmony in shapes.

Harmony.

Elegance is all a matter of balance.

Saint Patrick day … are we enough “green”?

Hi there …

Today another quite special post … a bit provocative if you want …

The excuse to write it: Saint Patrick … today 17th of March …

Big Irish festival, but celebrated worldwide with all shining in green, even buildings with nice lighting games.

But are we really that “green”?

How many green garments do you have or wear? Do you like it as a color? There are so many different shades! Not talking about grey, but of green of course!

Green color reminds me about the connection with our planet … Mother Nature … because from the grass to the forests … there are so many difference nuances.

I like i.e. “sage green” quite much, and also all the kind of green that go almost towards the blue, the darker ones.

We can think about environment in fashion not just selecting colors connected to the environment, but also choosing materials that are taking care of the environment in the making process and as materials themselves.

What about Cotton 100% Organic?

Even in food Organic seems to be so important as a choice sometimes …

And what about harmful chemicals?

It is important to be protected from substances potentially dangerous for our health.

And what about recycling?

Have you ever thought about it?

Next time instead of throwing away your old garments in the general bin, why not bringing them to the collection centres?

Then I am not going to enter in the big chapter of fur and special animals leathers.

But the principle even there is the respect of Nature and its creatures, not making them suffer for human pleasure, while on the market there are available so many not “real” furs and similar garments that could be just perfect if you like the style but without involving real animals!

Lilac ribbon- 15th of March 2017 National day for Dca (= eating disorders in Italy)

Hi again …

Today 15th of March 2017 an article that I said to myself I had to write.

Why?

Because I am explaining you if you read the following lines …

Today is the National day for the “eating disorders”. Lilac ribbon.

What does this mean?

It means that there are still too many people on this planet that are suffering for eating disorders.

Fashion has a big responsibility in this. Because the idea, the ideal model for “high fashion” has to have a size that cannot go above certain very strict standards.

Bra size, hips … lots of restrictions that sometimes go against each single person natural shape, not considering extra kilos but just the body shape.

Newspapers are still filled by articles of girls killing themselves just because they do stop eating, or they eat and then they force themselves to throw out all of what they’ve just taken in … because they see themselves too fat, where on the contrary are just skeletons.

And it exists also the opposite situation: not being able to stop eating, so putting on so much weight, not even being able to have a normal life with all related also heart and circulation issues and critical health conditions.

But there are not just these extreme terrible cases, majority of eating disorders could be at different levels, not to risk life, but enough to ruin a good relationship with food, making it not a pleasure moment but a punishment in both ways when we decide not to eat or when we force ourselves to eat too much and even after having stopped the starving feeling.

But why?

Do we really want to be who we are not?

Can we all possibly become as thin as those magazine models?

Is this our reality?

Or the model is it the perfect blond with even lips that do not look natural, a Playboy doll style?

What is it beauty?

What are we looking for? Who is the model we dream to look like?

Are we happy of our life? Or are media just showing a perfection that is just a mask?

And is a perfect looking body the real key for success and happiness in life?

Or is it just a way to attract the wrong people who will look for us just for it, our body, and not for who we really are?

The only way to have a good relationship with our body is to be in peace with ourselves. Starting from accepting ourselves, who we are, and also our external look.

Of course we are called to take care of our body as well of our soul: mens sana in corpore sano is the Latin famous sentence: a healthy mind in healthy body.

But do we have to become paranoid about our body? Pushing everything over the limit? I am thinking also about all gym addicted people …

Too much is too much in everything.

Balance. To find a balance mainly within ourselves.

I want to remind you all that to look beautiful the best way is to wear a true smile. And where does it come from? From the within peace of mind.

How can we find it? Where do we get it from?

Nowhere. It has to start and come within ourselves: realizing that nobody is perfect, not even life, nor ourselves. So we have to accept what we cannot change, and even for what concerns changes we are not switches, everything needs its time, so we cannot pretend too much, we have to be patient and accept what we cannot change and work on what we can work on, and most of all start from loving ourselves, even with our past mistakes, with our limits …

And I am telling you this because I have learned it.

When I was younger at university I was free but lonely. Knowing lots of people but sometimes having the feeling of having no one really caring for me. Alone for the first time in another city for studying. Freedom. Nobody preparing the dinner for you, so no food “rules”.

I was working also as PR in the city university evening parties and discos. I wanted to be and look perfect: so I was going to the swimming pool, fasting, skipping dinner, arriving at the disco where I was supposed to spend all evening with public relation with other university students … I was smiling, speaking with everyone, checking that the evening was going fine, having my list at the entrance …

The apparently very nice life: I was able also to get free drinks, nothing to pay, just to enjoy myself talking with everyone and going around the place. Nothing special but what else may a university student want from the evenings outside? People, music, free drinks …

Well to tell you the truth, I was going back home and opening the fridge! Anything: I am not ashamed to say it now, because I hope it will help who at the moment is in the same situation I was at the time. Simply completely unhappy about myself and my life, just wanting to look perfectly beautiful and ok from outside, but inside actually “screaming” because I was not living a life I was really happy about.

And the food was the punishment because I was not able to be enough slim, because my size has never dropped below a certain level: I am like this, but I could not accept it having a different idea in my mind of what I wanted to look like, like someone who wasn’t me.

I think we only have to tend to be the best version of ourselves. Not copying anyone, not wanting to look like anyone else, just to be ourselves at our best. So of course fit, and healthy with no extra kilos as a weight, but without becoming crazy about perfection. It does not exist and it will not make ourselves happy anyway.

I think even media give us a wrong example. Women to be attractive have to wear heels and short skirts, and breast showing tops and so on …

Absolutely not! We are women because we are women, not due to what we wear.

And even the idea of being sexy. What is it? We do not have to attract sex, but we must follow and look for only true love.

So being loved for who we are, and not for what we look like. For our soul, not for our body.

Of course we do have a body as well, but we do not have to forget that it is not the most important part of ourselves.

Our soul must be beautiful.

And even sport has to be a pleasant activity to get fit and in harmony with our body, not like a medicine to push up muscles in perfect sculpted shape.

So today let’s start our own fashion looking at the our real self, as Christina Aguilera song “Beautiful”.

And let’s work to get the best out of ourselves, not with wrong models or ideas, but just with the love we always must have for ourselves, because first rule if we want to love someone else and we want to be loved, is to be able to love truly ourselves always everyday starting from the mirror morning first look.

So no more food punishments.

Food has to be a necessary good pleasure, with an healthy balance diet especially in quantities that makes the real difference.

Being in peace with ourselves is the first step for being in peace also with all the rest of the planet.

So let’s start now a new beginning with a new glance in the mirror, not to judge us and punish us, but to love us and take care of ourselves.

We all have to improve ourselves and grow but it can be done only with real true love, and this way will do everything for us and not against us, and it will be a pathway we will enjoy to follow, with maybe little results day by day, but definitely with a different purpose and awareness, a true beautiful shining peace of mind.

And I finish just reminding you that stress helps in most cases just to put on weight! And increases our food disorders. So deep breath, a couple more hugs with who really loves us and cares about us in our life, and let’s go!

Life is here waiting! It has just started, we are in!

Let’s live it the best, and always always always only OUR WAY! Life is one and is just ours! Do not waste ourselves. Let’s take care of ourselves from now on every single moment.

We are the changement. We can find only inside ourselves true happiness: it cannot come from outside.

Let’s love life, because life is beautiful.

Never to give up!

Kid’s wear … a big chapter in the FASHION market

Here I am again!

This time quite a different topic …

Do you have any children?

Personally no, I do not have any. And I am not looking for having any for the time being. But I have attended in January the famous Pitti Bimbo exhibition, here in Florence, and I can say that it is a fascinating world for what concerns fashion and the clothing business.

One maybe obvious thing to say is that kid’s wear is not just simply an adult’s wear shrunk in size! It is much more! And different … and unique garments that only kids can wear looking amazingly beautiful!

One thing that I feel like saying is that kids have their own world which is precious, so I agree that children should not be dressed like little women or men, but like kids.

I don’t want to put here pictures of me when I was little, but I quite enjoyed looking back at them, and seeing how sometimes I was dressed so pretty! Thanks mum for the clothing choices and matches!

Then I remember when I was little, the first time I was trying to use make-up. And it was just for Carnival that make-up was permitted … the last day at school performance … these kind of events.

And playing with clothes in my grandmother wardrobe, wearing no matter what, and jewels: necklaces … Modeling was a kind of a game.

Kids should remain kids. They have time to face adulthood and all its beauties but also problems.

Another important thing is that kids should feel comfortable in what they are wearing, and not just look cute.

I remember at the elementary we were obliged to wear skirts, as girls, and I was not caring, I was playing football with my school mates anyway!

There are so many different garments.

For going to school, for going to play sports, for attending a birthday party and special occasions …

At Pitti really quite many inspirations for new outfits.

Almost Spring time … what’s below the clothes? Our body we must love it!

Dear readers …

Spring’s approaching quickly.

Weather’s changing. So it’s time to put away the wool and start wearing lighter clothes!

But what’s below the clothes?

Do we love our body?

Or winter time has made us put on some extra weight?

Nobody is perfect, so let’s start considering this. So regarding the outfit choices go for something you always feel at ease wearing.

Be yourself!

Inspired by a Facebook post I just replied to, I would like to give you here some easy tips to get better in shape with no efforts.

First of all cut desserts and sugars in general. It is not a big sacrifice. Just eat them more rarely.

Prefer brown sugar to white one and even better honey.

Second important thing to remember: avoid white bread and carbohydrates that are not wholegrain!

White pasta is ok, but better cutting white bread: GI too much higher.

Eat fresh fruit and vegetables. Less meat. More fish.

Cheese better very few times, if you could do only once a week would be ideal. You could go for yogurt at breakfast also or as a light dinner once in a while. And milk of course at breakfast so you have your calcium intake. With cheese you get too many fats.

Reduce or avoid for some time booze. I know, it is difficult, Sommelier’s speaking. But you will see. Alcohol is related also to our hormones balance and it is 7 kcal per gram! Even beer, just stop for a couple of weeks and you will see incredible results!

Avoid sparkling sugary drinks like Coke. Just fresh fruit juices and the ones with no added sugars in the ingredients (pineapple i.e.).

Ok for coffee, but not too many, especially avoid coffee in the late afternoon/evening if you want to get better sleep.

Sleeping is so important! The less you sleep the more you put on weight! It is not me saying it, but science: it is the melatonine balance that gets affected by the lack of sleep. At least 7 hours in a row. And avoid keeping technology close to the bed.

Drink at least 2 litres of water per day.

No snacks nor breaks. Just 3 meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

If you cannot do other way just fruit would be ok for the hunger.

No chips, cookies or any other packed food.

Stay simple. And also vegetables not to be cooked too much not to lose their vitamines content.

Do some sport. Yes. I will maybe talk about sport clothing in another post.

Anything.

Even just a walk. Some physical activity to boost your metabolism and gain back energies.

We all need it with the season change.

No butter, no margarine, nothing: for fats just extra virgin olive oil to use for cooking and raw.

Walnuts and dried fruits are important in a well balanced diet, but without exceeding: they are very high in calories.

And last advice: eat with calmness, and reduce quantities of everything.

Not a big effort, but quantity makes the biggest difference.

Try to cheat your mind using smaller plates, or at least make the food appearance to be like a full rich portion.

Don’t do other things while eating. Concentrate on the moment.

Enjoy the food. Chew slowly.

And I promise your weight will change!

Just little changements but with great results.

Variety.

And simply less.

If you prepare too much food put the rest in the freezer: it will be another meal another time.

So are you ready for lighter clothes in spring time?

If you have any chance to go for a swim, swimming is one of the best sports to get back quickly in shape.

But anyway stay active. Days are getting better, so don’t stay indoor: go outside, enjoy the sunshine.
